Sign in with ChatGPT could change who pays for inference

Eligible requests can run against a user’s ChatGPT allowance, changing the cost structure for participating apps.

The model bill has shaped the product

Many AI applications combine two charges inside one subscription: the software itself and the model usage required to run it. That makes margins sensitive to how often customers use the product, how long their prompts become and which model handles the work. A popular user can be less profitable than a quiet one.

Sign in with ChatGPT introduces another arrangement. OpenAI says eligible requests in participating apps can count against a Plus or Pro user’s ChatGPT Work and Codex usage. The user signs in without supplying an API key, and the participating app may still charge for its own subscription or features.

What the mechanism does — and does not do

For an eligible request, model consumption can move from the app developer’s API account to the user’s existing ChatGPT plan. This does not make inference free. It changes which commercial relationship carries the usage. OpenAI also documents a weekly per-app limit, so a product still needs a clear experience for customers who reach that allowance.

Access is not universal. OpenAI announced initial partners including Airtable, GitLab, HubSpot, Notion, Supabase and Vercel, while other developers can submit an interest form. Product teams should therefore treat the mechanism as an emerging distribution and billing option, not a dependency they can assume is available today.

The pricing opportunity

If the customer brings the model entitlement, an app can make its own value easier to see. The paid layer might be the workflow, the proprietary data, collaboration, approval controls or a specialised outcome. That separation can support simpler margins because the product price no longer has to conceal every eligible model call.

The strongest products will still need to work when allowances vary and plans change. Builders should model both routes: usage carried by the customer’s ChatGPT plan and usage purchased through the app’s own infrastructure. The opportunity is flexibility, provided the product remains valuable beyond access to a model.

When users bring an AI allowance, builders can price the workflow instead of bundling every model call.
